HIRSCH CHUMASH PDF

After all, Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch has probably had more influence on me than any other historical figure besides Rav Kook. The fact that I have devoted so much time to teaching and writing about Biblical parshanut only made it even more appealing. After the initial euphoria abated, however, I began to appreciate that the task was far from simple. Moreover, even after over a century, Hirsch still seems very modern. We can sense that he thinks like us and that he is bothered by many of the same things that bother us.

Thus when a new teacher recently asked me what commentaries will have the most appeal to his culturally ambivalent students, Hirsch was still at the top of my list. As for the new translation, there is good news and bad news. The good news is that it is highly readable. In fact, in terms of readability, it is not only better than the old English translation Levy ; it is also better than the Hebrew and certainly better than the original German. The bad news is that for all of its readability, the translation is not as loyal to the original as I would have liked.

While all of them reveal editorial decisions to simplify or slightly reinterpret the original, I felt that the older Levy translation shows greater understanding of Hirsch as a whole and so displays the greatest wisdom when veering from the German.

Writing that the Torah has no need to prove a doctrine that was seen to be common knowledge, Hirsch mentions the New Testament in passing. Still, there is clearly no heavy-handed attempt at revisionism here. And if that makes the new Hirsch a bit more bland, it is likely more a reflection of the contemporary Orthodox zeitgeist than of conscious mistranslation.

I am reminded of the controversy around the revised second edition of Shemirat Shabbat keHilchata, which was still brewing when I was a yeshiva student in Israel.

Under the guidance of Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, the first edition had taken several lenient positions which, apparently under pressure, were retracted in the new revised edition. At the time, it was all the rage to get a copy of the original edition and one has to be a yeshiva student to understand my glee when I was actually able to procure one.

But today, how many have even heard of the different editions? The second edition is more complete and the printing is easier on the eyes, so for the vast majority of people who want to use Shemirat Shabbat, getting the first edition is simply off the radar screen. No doubt, students are much more likely to consult the user-friendly new edition and ultimately that is the most important thing.

For whatever translation is used, Hirsch remains one of the best tools we have in teaching both parshanut and modern Jewish thought. Related Papers.
